Utah student allegedly said she would blow up nuclear reactor if Utes football team lost

A University of Utah student was arrested Wednesday after she allegedly threatened to detonate a nuclear reactor on campus if the Utes football team had lost to San Diego State over the weekend, according to university police.

According to police, the 21-year-old student allegedly posted on social media that, if the Utes lost Saturday’s game, she would be “detonating the nuclear reactor on campus.”

After identifying the woman and interviewing her, police arrested the woman Wednesday, and she was booked in the Salt Lake County Jail for making terroristic threats. She was released later Wednesday, according to online jail records.

Police noted that although the woman intended the comment to be a joke, “We have a zero-tolerance policy for these kinds of threats,” Chief Jason Hinojosa said in a statement. According to radio station KSL in Utah, which first reported on the woman’s arrest, police had noted in an affidavit that she had information about the reactor and had attended classes in the same building it is located.

Utah defeated San Diego State 35-7 on Saturday, as quarterback Cam Rising threw for 224 yards and four touchdown passes.
